State Councillor Carsten Frigge opens new transhipment hall at Hamburg Wholesale Market

Expansion with an eye to the future: the fruit importing / wholesaling firm Brodersen & Schacht GmbH has added a 1,600-square metre facility to its existing transhipment space at Hamburg Wholesale Market. It took only six months to build the new facility, which was opened on time at the start of the new year. The extension is impressive: the finished projects features eight loading bays, a cool-room extension holding up to 600 pallets, an additional 1,200 m² of distribution space and some 300 m² of new-build offices. On Friday, 09 January 2009, Carsten Frigge, State Councillor at the Ministry for Economics and Labour Affairs, officially declared the facility open at a ceremony hosted by the two managing directors of Brodersen & Schacht, Stefan Burmeister and Thomas Schacht.

An importer and wholesaler of fruit and vegetables, Brodersen & Schacht started trading at Hamburg Wholesale Market in 1989. Currently the “freshness experts” employ 33 men and women. The company has developed very well, and the volume of goods traded has grown steadily year by year. In view of this – and in response to increasingly demanding food retailers – Brodersen & Schacht decided that further expansion of the business was called for. “We also gave a great deal of thought to building a new facility outside the wholesale market,” says managing director Stefan Burmeister. “But in the end we came to the conclusion that Hamburg Wholesale Market is our best option on account of the wide range of synergies it offers.”

State Councillor Carsten Frigge said how pleased he was by the decision: “In the context of turning Hamburg Wholesale Market into a major logistics centre in the north of the country, we welcome this company’s choice and will continue to do everything in our power to create the best possible environment for the firms operating at the market.”
